Vertical Farming Systems | Automated Vertical Farm Technology - MTSys

MTSys moving cultivation towers of leafy greens inside a commercial vertical farm

The problem

Why fixed-rack vertical farms carry high costs

In most vertical farming systems the crops sit on the same spot for the whole grow cycle. They never space out, so space and energy go to waste. And because the crops can't come to the grower, people reach every plant by hand, which means aisles that enlarge the footprint and high operational labour. The result is high CAPEX, high OPEX and a high crop costs.

The approach

MTSys moving cultivation: fully automated vertical farming

MTSys moves the crops through the grow cycle instead of leaving them fixed. It is a fully automated vertical farming system on an automated monorail, and that one difference removes the costs built into the fixed rack.

No paths or aisles are needed, because crops travel to central workstations instead of the grower walking to them. Spacing happens automatically as they move, so every plant gets the room it needs and space and energy are used to the full.

Higher density, automatic spacing and concentrated labour pull CAPEX and OPEX down together, for a lower cost per kilogram.

Proof

Proven, not projected

The Naaldwijk pilot proves the numbers on a real commercial site. It packs 160 m² of active cultivation onto a 20 m² footprint, uses 70–90% less water than conventional hydroponics, and recorded roughly 2.9 kWh/kg of winter lighting energy for lettuce. Those are operational data, not spreadsheet assumptions.

See the Naaldwijk pilot on the Projects page.
